It started life as a competition-spec 427 Cobra before being converted into a road-legal machine—if you could call something with twin Paxton superchargers and over 800 horsepower "legal."

Only two were built, and they were both sold to the public. One went to Carroll Shelby himself, and the other to comedian Bill Cosby. He famously returned the car after a terrifying drive, and it was later destroyed in a crash. While that car was rebuilt, it leaves just one surviving intact Super Snake, making it not only one of the fastest Shelby cars ever produced, but also the rarest still in existence.

2. 1966 Shelby GT350 Convertible

In 1966, Shelby American quietly produced a handful of Shelby GT350 convertibles as an unofficial test run for a potential future offering. Unlike the fastback GT350s that filled dealer showrooms, these convertibles were barely advertised and slipped under the radar.

Only four were built and sold to customers, making them the rarest factory-produced Shelby Mustangs ever created. Each one came with the same high-revving 289-cubic-inch V8, racing stripes, and Shelby badging as the coupe versions, but in a far more exclusive open-top package. Today, these convertibles are considered the crown jewels among Shelby collectors.

3. 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe

Designed to beat Ferrari on the global racing stage, the Cobra Daytona Coupe wasn’t just a race car—it was a revolution. The car’s aerodynamic body, developed by Pete Brock, helped the Shelby team win the 1965 FIA World Manufacturers’ Championship.

Though it was purpose-built for competition, the Daytona Coupe was constructed to full production specs, and all six chassis were eventually sold into private hands after their racing careers ended. 4. 1963–1964 Shelby Cobra 289 Dragonsnake

While most Cobras were built for road racing, a few were turned into quarter-mile monsters. Shelby American offered a special drag racing package known as the Dragonsnake, and only a handful of customers opted for it.

Just five Cobra 289s were factory-built as Dragonsnakes; a single 427 model was also built. These cars came equipped with upgraded suspension, drag slicks, roll bars, and engine tuning designed for straight-line performance. They were loud, fast, and brutally effective at the drag strip. Their rarity and racing success make them a unique piece of Shelby history and one of the rarest Shelby production cars ever offered.

5. 1971 Shelby Europa (GT350/GT500)

Shelby’s involvement with Mustang production had officially ended by 1970, but a European dealer named Claude Dubois wasn’t ready to let go of the magic. With Shelby’s blessing, Dubois built a tiny batch of Shelby-branded Mustangs for the European market in 1971.

Only nine of these cars were built in total. They included both Shelby GT350 and GT500 models, modified from stock 1971 Mustangs with unique Shelby touches and performance upgrades. Sold under the “Shelby Europa” name, these cars were never offered in the U.S. and remain virtually unknown to many Shelby fans.
