Carroll Shelby’s Original Auto Shop in Venice, CA
1042 Princeton Drive in Venice, California, is the birthplace of the Shelby Cobra and the site of the late Maveric’s many groundbreaking automotive innovations. With its red brick facade and 10,860 square feet, the original Shelby American auto shop housed visionary ideas, legendary designers and engineers, and an unwavering commitment to beating the competition on and off the track.
The Humble Beginnings of an Automotive Legend
After retiring from racing in 1960, Shelby decided to embark on the next chapter of his legacy: car manufacturing. He founded Shelby American to fulfill his vision of creating a new breed of street-legal cars that could dominate on and off the strip.
RAI and the Original Shop
Carroll Shelby purchased his original auto shop in 1962 from Lance Reventlow, owner of Reventlow Automobiles, Inc. (RAI). The shop wasn’t his only RAI acquisition; Shelby hired RAI’s master fabricator and chief engineer, Phil Remington, to join his Shelby American team and help make history. As depicted in the 2019 film Ford v Ferrari, Shelby acquired a 1956 Fiat Series 306/2 Grand Prix transporter during the deal, used to transport the Cobra Daytona coupes across Europe.
Shelby American’s First Projects
Within his first year at the original shop, Shelby released the Shelby Cobra. Shelby's vision came to life — the sleek, lightweight body of the original British AC Ace coupled with a beastly Ford V8 engine. The Shelby Cobra is one of the most iconic cars in automotive history, with variations of the model still manufactured yearly. It remains a highly coveted and exclusive muscle car to this day.
Key Innovations from the Venice Workshop
From 1962–1967, the Shelby American team developed some of the most influential technological advancements in that infamous Venice workshop. Shelby and his exceptional team pioneered new technologies and design principles that exceeded and evolved the standard, creating a new benchmark for manufacturers everywhere.
Lightweight Bodies, Powerful Engines
The key to fulfilling Shelby’s vision of creating cars that combined European agility with American muscle power was aerodynamics. The Shelby American team used aerodynamic principles to contrast the powerful V8 engine performance without compromising superior vehicle handling. This approach led to the development of iconic vehicles and solidified Shelby as a master of his craft.
The Shelby Cobra
The Cobra name came to Shelby in a dream, and he followed that dream until he developed the legendary Shelby Cobra. His goal was to combine the British AC chassis with a Ford big block V8 engine. AC Cars was thrilled about this idea, as they had recently lost their engine supplier. Ford Motor Company was equally enthusiastic about the potential to compete head-to-head with the Chevrolet Corvette in the US and against Ferrari in Europe. Since its inception, Ferrari had dominated the World Manufacturer’s GT Championship, and Shelby was determined to dethrone them.
Shelby’s dream came to fruition with the release of the Shelby Cobra in 1962. Equipped with the Ford 260 and later the 289 cubic-inch engines, it was a force to be reckoned with on and off the tracks.

1962: Shelby creates Shelby American and leases his Venice workshop.
1962: The Shelby Cobra is born.
1963–1965: Shelby American saw remarkable success on the racetrack, winning a host of races, including the World Manufacturer’s GT Championship, the SCCA United States Road Racing Championship, the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans, and the 1965 24 Hours of Daytona.
1964: The Daytona Coupe is released and wins the 1964 Le Mans.
1965: Shelby American partnered with Ford to create the first Shelby Mustang GT350.
1966: The Ford GT40 wins a historic 1-2-3 finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
1967: The Shelby GT500 is introduced.
The People Behind the Innovations
Shelby’s military and racing background created unmatched discipline and exceptional leadership and strategy skills. He is known for his groundbreaking designs, but a critical component of his lasting legacy was his innate ability to build legendary manufacturing and racing teams.
The Dream Team
The Shelby American Team was made up of legendary members of the automotive and racing world. Ken Miles, Pete Brock, Phil Remington, and Roy Lunn were among some of the iconic members of the Shelby American Team and helped design, engineer, manufacture, and test the company’s historic cars.
Ken Miles was on board from the start. He was instrumental in the development of several versions of the Shelby Cobra. His partnership with Shelby is an incredible story of victory, the revolutionization of automotive engineering, and an unwavering spirit.
Pete Brock was Shelby American’s first employee. His genius when it came to aerodynamics and automotive design was the stuff of legends. Phil Remington, Shelby’s chief engineer, was a critical part of the Cobra’s win at Le Mans and the 1965 FIA Manufacturers' World Championship. Engineer and designer Roy Lunn led the team that created the first American car to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans.
Legacy of the Venice Workshop
Although Shelby American was headquartered at the original Venice workshop for just five years before having to expand, that space left a lasting legacy on the automotive and racing world.
On-Track Victories
The cars developed at the original Venice workshop led to historic race victories for the Shelby American Team. Most notably was the monumental 1965 World Sportscar Championship win. The Shelby Cobra dethroned Ferrari and became the first American manufacturer ever to win the title. That record still belongs to Shelby American.
Winning the 1964 Le Mans with the Shelby Daytona Coupe was a legendary moment in American motorsports history. It announced the arrival of American ingenuity in a monumental, global way.
Shelby American’s 1-2-3 win at the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans with the GT40 was another historic moment in which this legendary team proved it was exceptional at beating the odds.
